Like racing games but don't have the desk space for a wheel and pedal combo? The designers at InterAct had you in mind when they created the UltraRacer PC. There is nothing fancy to its setup or operation. It works with all racing games under both DOS and Windows. The initial reaction I had was "its like a Pong controller" (instantly dating myself!)

I tried the UltraRacer PC with a variety of race games including POD, Nascar II, Ultimate Race Pro, Interstate 76, and Need For Speed III. Setup was problem free for each. My only complaint was that for some games with detailed controls there just were not enough buttons to control everything without having to revert to the keyboard.

Setup using an A3D soundcard's gameport is problematic for some users. I only experienced this problem once when I first setup the controller months ago; since it has not been an issue but I do not know what made it stop.

Features -

  • Analog interface
  • 4 buttons (2 with auto-fire)
  • Trim Controls

System Requirements-

PC system, gameport.

Price -

With most wheels costing at least twice the price the $30 suggested retail price is a good deal.

Performance -

The UltraRacer PC is a very nice wheel and throttle combination. It has a comfortable turning radius and responds well. Similarly, the throttle control works well but braking is somewhat awkward as you have to push up with your index finger.

With all games tested the controller performed well.

Setup -

Setup can not get more simple. Plug the UltraRacer PC into you gameport and configure/calibrate it as a 2 axis, 4 button joystick in Windows or from within the DOS game setup.

Software -

No software is needed or provided.

Documentation -

Documentation consists of a 4 page manual. The setup procedure is described along with a description of the UltraRacer PC's features.

Overall Rating -

The UltraRacer PC is a nice controller for weekend race fans. It lacks many features of "standard" wheel but does not carry the price tag or demand the desk space of the standard wheels. It won't give you the same feel as being in your car but it will give you greater control over using the keyboard or mouse. If you looking for a controller for your racing games that won't take up more room than your monitor- give the UltraRacer PC a try.
