Even before I amassed dozens of controllers I was a frustrated user; having to pull my computer case out from its cozy home to switch controllers. The smartest purchase I made was picking up a joystick switch at a computer show. Now the switch box sits on top of my tower and allows me to have 2 separate controllers attached for easy switching. It is also easy to reach the plug for switching.
Features -
- A/B Switch
- 2 15 pin connectors for controllers
- 1 15 pin connector (to game port)
System Requirements-
Game port
Price -
I picked up the switch and 3 foot cable for $12.
Performance -
This setup makes it extremely simple to switch controllers. If you have a low powered soundcard a switch may not work properly because of the extra distance the signal must travel. It can also be a source for interference because the switch mechanism is not well shielded.
I could not use the switch with an Aztech PCI soundcard and Microsoft Sidewinder Force-Feedback stick but it now works fine using a Creative Labs PCI card.
Setup -
Simply, secure the cable to the game port and switch box, plug in your favorite controllers and your off.
**Software -
**None required.
Documentation -
None provided.
Overall Rating -
If you have more than one controller I highly recommend a switch. Since there are no manufacturer name printed on the variety of switches available out there in this style you'll be taking you chances. The one I picked up was great but there are many "not so great" ones out there too.
